Kate Brody & Lucas Bernstein
Congratulations to our 2019 Michigan Qualifiers, Kate Brody & Lucas Bernstein, for advancing to the Drive, Chip & Putt National Championship at Augusta National Golf Club on April 4, 2021!

Drive, Chip and Putt is making changes to is program with its participants, guardians, PGA Sections and host facilities in mind:

  1. Following guidelines establishes by local health authorities.
  2. Reducing the maximum number of participants at each local qualifying site.
  3. Promoting social distancing by designating specific arrival times and starting times for each participant as well as limiting the number of spectators on site at each event.
  4. Reducing physical contact at events such as utilizing electronic scoring, contactless registration/awards and not allowing high fives or handshakes

GENERAL COMMUNICATION ITEMS EACH PARTICIPANT WILL BE AWARE OF:

  1. Before registering for a local qualifier, a participant’s guardian must review and agree to the COVID-19 release and waiver on the DCP website.
  2. If exhibiting signs of COVID-19, participants and guardians must stay home. The DCP team will work with the guardian to find another qualifying site later in the year.
  3. Adhere to designated arrival and start times as well as depart immediately after the participant’s awards ceremony is completed.
  4. Must wear face coverings and maintain proper social distancing.
  5. Avoid physical contact such as high fives and handshakes when greeting someone of celebrating.
  6. Must use their own equipment. No sharing of golf clubs.
  7. Wash Hands thoroughly or use hand sanitizer before and after the qualifying event.

REGISTRATION

  • Event administrators will be encouraged to stage registration outdoors whenever possible (in compliance with local health guidelines / inclement weather).
  • Event administrators will set up a table for participants to pick up their own gifts. Event administrators will not touch each individual gift or hand it to the participant. This will be a “contactless” experience for participants.
  • Participants will not be allowed to check-in at registration more than 45 minutes prior to their scheduled tee time. This will drastically reduce the number of people on property for the event at any given time.

PRACTICE AREA

  • Participants will not be allowed to use the practice facilities until they have completed registration (45 minutes prior to their tee time).
  • Event administrators will ensure that driving range setups are socially distanced. Putting greens and chipping greens will be monitored to ensure safety.

DRIVE SKILL

  • Event administrators will not be able to employ a shotgun start format. This qualifying season, participants will be assigned to individual tee times or to groups with four participants or less.
  • Participants must stand at least 6 feet apart when waiting for instructions and their turn to play.
  • Participants will not be allowed to share equipment, such as golf clubs, unless it is with another family member.

CHIP & PUTT SKILL

  • The Putt and Chip Skills are often the second or third skills administered at each competition. There are typically not many participants waiting to compete in the putt or chip skill.
    • If participants are waiting in line to compete in the putt or chip skill, they must maintain proper social distance from the other participants and spectators.
  • Participants like to use their own golf balls at these two skills.
    • Participants will have to retrieve their own golf balls during both the putting and chipping skills. Volunteers will not be allowed to pick up the participants golf balls for them (may use a golf club or their foot to hit them back or remove from the scoring rings).

SCORING AREA

  • Event administrators will be encouraged to stage the scoring area outdoors whenever possible (in compliance with local health guidelines / inclement weather) and in a location where social distancing can be maintained. Hand sanitizer should be available near the scoring area for participants, staff members and volunteers.
  • Participants should place their scorecard on the table for an administrator to retrieve to maintain social distancing.

AWARDS

  • Event administrators will be encouraged to stage the awards ceremony outdoors whenever possible (in compliance with local health guidelines / inclement weather) and in a location where social distancing can be maintained.
  • Event administrators will set up a table for participants to pick up their own awards. Event administrators will not shake the participant’s hand to congratulate them.
  • Individual photos will be acceptable, but photos with large groups of participants will not be encouraged unless social distancing is maintained.

COURSE EVACUATION

  • All participants and guardians will be asked to go back to their vehicles if they need to evacuate the property. Large gatherings inside or outside the clubhouse will not be acceptable.
  • Rather than making announcements/updates regarding the weather in a large room inside the clubhouse, event administrators should provide weather updates via email.

SPECTATORS

  • Participants are typically able to have an unlimited number of spectators come out and support them at their Drive, Chip and Putt qualifier.
    • Whenever possible, spectators should be limited to family or legal guardians.
  • Spectators are encouraged to cheer and support all players in the competition, not just their own.
    • While verbal encouragement and clapping will still be encouraged, spectators must maintain proper social distancing and avoid handshakes and high fives with other guardians and participants that are not a part of their family

Drive, Chip & Putt is a free event that is open to boys and girls ages 7-15. Juniors are separated into four age divisions for both boys and girls: 7-9 years old, 10-11 years old, 12-13 years old, & 14-15 years old. Participants advance through local, sub-regional, and regional qualifiers to make it to the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club on the Sunday before the Masters.

At each qualifying level, participants hit three shots at each station, Drive, Chip & Putt, for a total of nine shots. Each shot receives a point value. There are prizes for the top three in each Skill and for the top three Overall participants. The contestant with the highest number of accumulated points will be declared the Overall Champion in their age division.

The Sub-Regional has the same format as the Local Qualifier, however, only the top two Overall participants in each age & gender division will advance to the Regional Qualifier (16 kids). At the Regional Qualifier, scores from the Sub-Regional will not be taken into account.

The Regional Qualifier has the same format as the previous two qualifiers, however, only the Overall Champion in each age & gender division will advance to the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club (8 kids).
