South Lyon, MI – It took two extra holes to decide the winner as the team of professional Matt Zavadil from Oakland University Golf & Learning Center and his amateur partners Brad Bastion, Chad Johnson and Austin Kreger picked up the win and survived the three- team playoff.
A sold-out opening event kicked off the Michigan PGA Section Tournament season on Monday as 36 teams competed in this 4 person team scramble event at Walnut Creek Golf & Country Club. Cold morning weather a difficult course set up and fast and firm greens made for tough scoring conditions.
At the end of the day we had three teams tied at the top with scores of (-13) under par, 59. The other two teams advancing to the playoff were professionals Jeff Gniewek and Chris Zito from Knollwood CC, PGA Life Member Barry Pearce and Payne Gniewek from Barton Hills CC along with the team of father / daughter Tom Harding from Carls Golfland and Caroline Harding from Meadowbrook CC, Kevin Muir from The Wyndgate and George Bowman from Oakhurst Golf & CC.
On hole #1 of the North Course Chad Johnson made about a 30-foot putt for birdie for his team followed up with Caroline Harding making about a 20 foot putt for birdie to advance their team to the next playoff hole. The team of Gniewek, Gniewek, Zito and Pearce could not get their birdie putt to fall. Down to two teams Austin Kreger rolled in about a 20-foot putt for birdie at the par 3 8th hole to clinch the win for his team !
