The top playing Michigan Senior PGA Professionals were back in Northern Michigan this week, as Hidden River Golf & Casting Club in Brutus ,MI played host to the Michigan Senior PGA Championship. 55 Michigan PGA Professionals teed it up on Monday and Tuesday to compete for the Michigan Senior PGA Championship Title as well as 8 qualifying spots for the 35th   Senior PGA Professional National Championship on September 24 – 29 at Sun River Resort in Sun River, Oregon.

After round 1 it was Chad Kurmel, Assistant Golf Coach at Michigan State University that held the lead after shooting a -4 under par round of 68. The lead was only one shot as Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member and 2020 Champion Scott Hebert from Traverse City Golf & Country Club fired a -3 under par round of 69.

Chad held this lead up until the last hole, but with Scott making birdie and Chad a bogey it forced a playoff with both players finishing at -4 under par for the tournament.

It took four playoff holes but Chad was able to close out the victory with a birdie picking up his first Michigan Senior PGA title and first win as a senior as he just turned 50 two years ago.

Our defending champion Jim Deiters from Midland Country Club made a nice run with the low round on Tuesday with a -4 under par 68, but finished just one shot back of the playoff.

By finishing in the top 8 Chad, Jim and Scott qualify for the 2024 Senior PGA Professional National Championship. Scott is also exempt for the Senior PGA National Championship after winning this event in 2019.

Those also qualifying and representing the Michigan Section at the Senior PGA Professional National Championship will be Jeff Roth from the BOYNE Golf Academy, Scott Brotebeck from Walnut Creek Golf & Country Club, Matt Zavadil, PGA Life Member, Jordan Young from Jordan Young Golf and Kevin Muir from The Wyndgate. Kevin and Jordan picked up the last 2 spots in a five for two playoff.

In the super senior 70 and older division, it was PGA Life Member and Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Randy Erskine that took home top honors with rounds of 73 on Monday and 70 on Tuesday.
