Ypsilanti, MI – On a day of dodging heavy storms and humidity, we have a new champion of the 2022 National Car Rental Michigan Assistants Championship. Josh Fryer of Franklin Hills Country Club is our new Assistant Champion. 32 Michigan PGA Section Assistants teed it up on Monday at the Marriott at Eagle Crest competing not only for the title but three qualifying spots into the 2022 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship.

In the first round of the 36 hole event, Fryer fired a solid and common score of even par putting himself in the mix with other players who have had successful careers and outings at this tournament in the past including Kyle Dobbs, Cody Haughton, and Adam Schumacher to just name a few. After the first round, Josh said when talking with him at the clubhouse “I need 65 in the final round”. Well, although it was not a 65, Fryer went on to fire the low round of the day of 66 for 6-under for the tournament to get the job done and claim the $1,600 first place winnings.

Trying to chase down Fryer was Oak Pointe Country Club’s Kyle Dobbs. In the first round Dobbs shot a 1-over 73 to put himself in the mix but knew he needed to go low in the final round with a couple players under par after the first round. In the final round, Dobbs fired the second lowest round of the tournament of a 68 4-under par to finish 3-under par for the tournament to claim the runner-up spot and the second qualifying spot.

For our last qualifying spot of the day and coming in third place for the tournament was Ryan Bayer out of Kent Country Club. In the first round, Bayer took the lead of the tournament by shooting a very impressive 3-under par 69 going into the second round. Bayer couldn’t quite keep the momentum going in the second round but still fired a very respectable 1-over par 73 which was good enough for the third qualifying spot at 2-under par for the tournament.

We have 3 alternate spots locked up as well. The first alternate spot goes to Andrew Mogg out of Wabeek Country Club who locked up the spot with a 71 1-under par in the first round of the tournament followed up by a closing even par 72 final round for a 1-under finish for the tournament. We had a playoff between Adam Schumacher from Point O’Woods Country Club and Cody Haughton of Red Run Golf Club who were tied at even par for the tournament going into the playoff for the 2nd and 3rd alternate spots. After one playoff hole on the par 5 10th hole at Eagle Crest Golf Club, Schumacher was one up on Haughton giving him the 2nd alternate spot.

The top 3 players advance to the 2022 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship on November 17-20, 2022 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

We also would like to give a huge thanks to the Marriott at Eagle Crest Golf Club for being such an incredible venue not only this year, but in all of the years past as well. Also a huge thanks to the Director of Golf Wes Blevins, and all of his staff going above and beyond and supplying us with all that the Michigan Section needs to make this tournament so great.
